Curlers

Whether curlers for short hair, electric or self-adhesive. Which Heating coil can score points in our 2024 test? We present our top 6 heat rollers here!

Curlers

Curlers have long been used to add volume and bounce to limp strands. You may even remember seeing Coke cans (in pictures, of course) to achieve that coveted volume. But curlers are making a comeback thanks to their ability to create effortless-looking texture and volume, while actually being quite effortless. Whether you're looking for an electric curler or want to save a little time in the morning, heated curlers could be your solution.

But before you get started, here are some tips to make sure you get the most out of your new routine. Don't forget to spray a little heat protection spray on your hair before pinning it down. While hot curlers are less damaging than Straightener or curling iron , it is always good to take the extra precautions when it comes to keeping your hair healthy. Also, don't forget to let the curlers cool completely before removing them. This is crucial as your hair needs to cool in the same curl pattern that you heated it in to create the longest lasting waves. Now for the selection of the most suitable curlers for you.

Here are the best hot curlers for every type of curl.

How do I use curlers?

1. shampoo your hair

Before you use a curler. Clean hair is easier to style. Oily hair can be difficult to work with. You also don't want your hair to look greasy after curling.

2. spray some mist

Moisten your hair with a Heat protection spray. When you use Velcro curlers, protect Hairsprays your hair from frizz. Even wet hair can be styled quickly and gives you defined curls in no time.

Divide your hair into four sections

This helps to quickly complete the curling process later with the curlers. It also gives you neater curls. By creating small sections, you can work with your hair in less time. No mess; just curls!

4. winding and rolling

Depending on the type of curls you want, you can choose the size of the curlers. Large rollers will give you wavy curls and smaller rollers will give you tight curls. Wrap your hair around the roller, roll it up and secure it with a pin or clip. Leave to rest for 45 minutes. Unwrap to see the magic.

5. adjust the curls

It is entirely up to you to become heat-free when air-drying your hair. Once your hair is coiled and set, spritz on some hairspray. This step saves time and gives faster results.

6. carefully remove the curlers

This is the difficult part. Unwind one roller at a time and unravel them slowly. Unwinding the rollers in a fast movement can lead to tangles and crimps.

7. spread the curls with your fingers

Gently loosen the curls by shaking them with your fingers. Often they fall out too tightly or unevenly. Therefore, run your fingers from the roots to the tips and distribute them evenly. This will give you shiny and beautiful curls.

8. use a hairspray to hold the curls in place.

For the final touch, set these stunning curls with a little hairspray. This will keep the curls in place and help them last longer.

9. voila!

What are curlers?

Curler test

Now that we've done our curler test, it's easy to see what they are. Curlers are cylindrical beauty products that are used to give straight or slightly wavy hair great curls and volume. The hair is wound up either wet or dry (depending on the product) and fixed until the hair has reached the desired shape. In the past, curlers were made from wooden sticks or iron rollers.

Today they are made of plastic, aluminium, foam cords or brass wire. Curlers are part of the traditional way of curling and in recent years have faced a lot of competition from the practical curling iron. In order to keep up, however, curler manufacturers have long since upgraded and developed electric curlers, which - similar to the Curling iron - Use heat to bring the hair into shape.

Curlers or curling iron?

Although the popularity of the curling iron has increased recently, classic curlers have some significant advantages that simply cannot be replaced by anything else. We have summarised them here for you:

  1. Curlers create larger curls and at the same time pimp the volume of your hair, while curls from a curling iron often hang out faster.
  2. The result is usually more even and natural with curlers, especially if you use curlers in different sizes.
  3. Especially foam curlers, i.e. papilottes, work as a time-saver as they shape the hair overnight. It's a wonderful feeling to just wake up in the morning with perfect curls!
  4. If you want to spare your hair the stress of a heat treatment, it is best to use conventional curlers, such as adhesive curlers or papilottes, because they are gentle on the hair.

What to look for in curlers

Depending on how long your hair is and how big you want your curls to be, you may need more or fewer rollers. For short to medium length hair, 5 to 8 rollers are enough. For long hair, however, 12 rollers are usually recommended. But of course it also depends on the type of curlers. After all, more hair will fit on large volume rollers for big curls or waves than on the narrow paper rollers for small stop curls.

Also, before you buy, you should know whether you want small or big curls, or maybe just more volume, and choose the product accordingly (see our test above). When using curlers, you should always have time and patience. It's important to be precise and take care not to tangle the hair, as this can cause it to break. Also make sure that you remove them without pulling, so as not to stress the hair unnecessarily. In our hairdressing salon, we have also been able to find the best Curling brushes 2024 test.

Questions and answers

How do I use curlers correctly?

For inexperienced beginners, the application can be a little tricky at first. Make sure you comb your hair carefully and divide it into different sections. You should then carefully curl the curlers from the tip of the hair to the head and then fix them in place. To make your curls last, it is advisable to fix them with hairspray after twisting them out.

How long should curlers stay in the hair?

It depends on the style you want. But: The longer you keep them in, the longer the hair will keep its shape afterwards. The minimum waiting time for rollers without heat is at least one hour.

Which curlers are recommended for long hair?

It is not easy to create beautiful curls with curlers on long hair, as they are usually very heavy and therefore unhook quickly. It is therefore advisable to use a set of heated rollers for long hair, as the heat shapes the hair particularly intensively. And very important: don't forget hairspray to fix it!

Are heat rollers harmful to the hair?

Heat always stresses the hair. Therefore, just like when styling with a curling iron, you should always use a heat protection spray beforehand!
