Glaetteisen

Our 2nd place best straightener is the Braun ST710. The Braun Satin Straightener does what it is supposed to - it straightens the hair. However, thicker hair needs to be crossed over the strand several times, otherwise the result is unsatisfactory. Thanks to the IONTEC technology, this product offers more protection and moisture for the hair at the same time. It is suitable for all hair types (especially thinner hair) and can be adjusted manually. The price-performance ratio is therefore completely in order.

  • Can style curls and waves
  • Better styling protection thanks to IONTEC
  • Detailed operating instructions
  • Easy to use

3rd place: Remington S7710 Straightener

Glaetteisen

The straightener from Remington comes in third place. We are thrilled with the triple ion technology. The heat-up time is only 15 seconds. With a great digital display with nine temperature settings from 150-230° C. This straightener also has a temperature boost function that allows you to quickly set the maximum temperature. We love the straightener and use it for our styling outside the salon.

4th place: Cloud Nine Straightener

Cloud-Nine

Our absolute recommendation when it comes to a professional straightener. This hair straightener is more expensive than its competitors, but much further ahead in terms of quality. With Cloud Iron, the styling iron, you have the flexibility to create a variety of different hair styles even at lower temperatures. With this straightening iron, you can unleash the creative side of your soul. Style your hair anew time and time again.

You decide with a flick of your wrist whether you want to style perfect curls, sweeping waves or sleek, straight hair. 5th place: Straightening Iron Udo Walz Beurer B15

Straightener

The Udo Walz straightening iron from beurer heats up quickly and is very easy to use. However, it has no display and the operating instructions are only available in German. Price-performance ratio: Top!

Straightener instructions

Styling appliances for hair are an indispensable aid, especially for womankind, as the hair straightener or straightening iron shows. Already in the past, people, not only women, used iron rods to curl the main hair. They were heated over a burning flame to be used for curling. Such a dangerous endeavour is no longer necessary nowadays, as well-known manufacturers of the modern age have tackled the problem.

How does a straightening iron work?

The electronic hair styling device essentially consists of two halves that are joined together to form a kind of sandwich. The material is usually made of durable plastic and overall a straightener is rather slim. Elongated and therefore very manoeuvrable. On each inner side, the so-called "iron" is attached and firmly installed. At present, the plates are made of materials that do not overtax our hair. The components develop heat of up to 240 degrees and should therefore not come into contact with the skin. The strong even heat enables the smoothing effect that results from the correct use of the flat iron.

To protect the hair structures and prevent burns, the plates have a special coating, often made of ceramic or Teflon. The remaining parts of the straightener are usually made of robust plastic.

The straightener is connected to the mains via a cable. In the meantime, there are also radio devices that are supplied with energy via a rechargeable battery. After activation via the mains switch, the heating plates heat up and the working temperature is usually reached within 15 to 60 seconds. In most cases, the temperature can be adjusted with a rotary dial. However, some straighteners also adjust the heat automatically to protect the appliance and the hair from damage. For most models, the selectable temperatures are between 100 and 230 ° C.

The hair is placed in small strands between the heating plates, which continuously transfer heat to the hair as the straightener moves down from the roots to the tips. Do not store the straightener on heat-sensitive surfaces after the straightening process is complete and do not store it in a bag immediately as it may take some time for the appliance to cool down.

FAQ - Questions and answers

Which straightening iron suits me?

You need to select the high-quality plate material flat iron. The best-known materials for flat iron plates are ion, tourmaline and ceramic. More in our article.

Which heat setting for straighteners?

Adjustable heat settings are suitable for those with less curly, wavy or normal hair as the heat can be adjusted accordingly, while flat irons with fixed heat settings are suitable for particularly curly hair.

How do I choose my first straightener?

First you should know your hair type and then choose a suitable plate size and temperature setting. For more information, see our guide.

How do I curl my hair with a straightener?

It is very possible to create a wavy beach style with a straightener.

What temperature should I set for my hair?

Your hair type, section and plate size determine the temperature. Because the highest heat setting can reach 410F (even more) and the lowest can reach 170F.

Why do I need to clean my straightener?

Many things burned and stuck to the surface of plates. You have to wipe them off, which not only prevents hair loss but also conducts heat properly.

Which straightening iron suits me?

Which model is perfect for each type depends on several factors. Many are based solely on product design, which is not advisable. Much more important are aspects like:

  • Handling
  • Safety precautions
  • Hair protection
  • Performance
Hair straightener

Our comparison of straighteners is intended to make the purchase decision easier for interested customers. Therefore, safety features of the individual devices, user-friendliness and performance are decisive for our recommendations. Besides the right straightening technique, the high quality of the hair straightener is what counts most. The type of panels is of great importance in the selection process. Pure metal should not hit the hair under any circumstances. Modern panels are covered with ceramic or Teflon and feel extremely smooth. In addition to the coating, the technology behind the panels also plays a role. Cutting-edge is ionic technology, which keeps hair supple by binding moisture. In addition, some manufacturers use inaudible sound waves to achieve the perfect result. Others place great emphasis on specially sprung screed plates. The spring technology also helps to distribute the pressure evenly over the hair strand.

Just as crucial as the technology used is the temperature of the straightening iron. During hair styling, the heat should radiate evenly. The chosen straightener should have an adjustable temperature function and an automatic switch-off function. The latter serves as a safety feature if the appliance is not switched off manually.

Which is better: titanium or ceramic straighteners?

This depends on your hair type. However, choose a ceramic straightener if your hair is easy to straighten and a titanium straightener if your hair is coarse and harder to straighten. Why? Because titanium plates heat up faster and can usually reach much higher temperatures than ceramic plates, they are the best choice for straightening coarse, curly or frizzy hair.

However, higher temperatures cause more damage. If your hair is fine, wavy or easy to straighten, use a ceramic flat iron (often combined with tourmaline plates), which distributes the heat more evenly at lower temperatures and causes less damage.

Which straighteners do professionals and salons use?

Titanium straighteners are the most popular choice in both salons and professional hairdressing sets, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're best for your own hair type (erm, read the whole titanium vs ceramic debate above). Regardless of which straightener you choose, keep the heat low (the lowest and safest temperature possible to still straighten your hair) and use a good Heat protection spray. Do straightening irons damage the hair?

Healthy looking hair should continue to look good and already damaged hair should not be ruined further. To be able to style your hair beautifully without damaging it, you should make the right decision when buying. Our price comparison not only shows you the lowest price, but also all the appliance features. With this information, you can find the best hair straightener for you. A high quality hair straightener allows for healthy hair despite special straightening techniques. Only used products with scratched plates can permanently destroy the hair.

If you already have damaged hair, you should only use a straightener occasionally and attach great importance to comprehensive care. The radiant heat on the hair should not be underestimated. Although new appliances can offer up to 240 degrees, this should be as low as possible. According to star hairdressers around the world, up to 180 degrees is sufficient to achieve a smooth result. Maximum peaks of this kind should therefore not make a purchase decision. Here, too, less is more!

Possibilities with a straightening iron

A hair straightener can not only be used to create very different hairstyles.

1. hair straightening

Before any treatment with a straightening iron, it is advisable to apply a special heat protection to the hair, for example in the form of a liquid or spray. This prevents excessive heat build-up. Since wet hair is very sensitive, the straightener should only be used on dry or at least semi-dry hair. To achieve straightening effects, the hair is placed strand by strand between the heating plates and the appliance is then guided evenly from top to bottom. The hand describes a wide arc that prevents the formation of protruding hair ends. To avoid burns, the straightening iron must not touch the scalp.

2. wavy hair

The straightener can be used to create curls in different ways. In all variants, kneading the foam booster beforehand creates additional volume. In principle, it is easiest to first tie the upper hair into a plait and start with the hair underneath.
The straightener is moved down about two centimetres from the hairline, then rotated 180 ° around itself and pulled to the ends of the hair in this position. Alternatively, the hair can be wrapped around the heating surface in strands. The straightening iron is then guided downwards. Particularly natural-looking curls are created when the hair is twisted onto small rolls of aluminium foil, which are then heated with the straightening iron.
Hairspray fixes the curls. However, for really beautiful curls we recommend our Curling iron test winner 2024.

3. gentle waves

For slightly wavy hair, first braid all the hair into narrow plaits and gradually place them between the heating plates. This method creates a discreetly crossed hairstyle with small waves.

How do I straighten my hair?

Straight hair is not only "in", but also very beautiful to look at. To master a good result, the hair should not yet be completely dry. From then on, the 3-step rule applies.

  1. Check: Step 1 says that you should check your hair structure. Are the strands already damaged or do you have healthy hair? The healthier, the more often you can subject it to the straightening process. If you already suffer from split ends and co, you should not constantly reach for the hot straightening iron and consider step 2.
  2. Shooters:Step 2 says that you should protect your hair. They are your most important beauty feature and should therefore only be styled gently. Specially developed products help to preserve the structure. Similar to hair dryer sprays, special lotions and co can be worked into the hair before straightening.
  3. Act Step 3 involves the hair styling itself. Important tips are especially for beginners to avoid unwanted effects.

Straightener with cable or without?

When looking for a new styling appliance, it is easy to notice. Typical models, no matter what brand, are usually equipped with cables. Why is that? We live in a wireless age and yet all the Straightener wired. A battery is easy to integrate, but can have a negative impact on weight and size. The lighter the styling tool, the better the handling and the end result. Professional styling experts often have a wireless version. Due to the battery technology, these devices are somewhat more expensive and therefore usually only in expert hands. Convenient to buy are travel straighteners. These also come with a cord, but overall in a convenient mini format. An indispensable companion for the holidays!
