The right razor – more blades aren’t always better.

A good razor shaves closely without irritating your skin. What the number of blades really means, when a simpler razor is the better choice – and which models we recommend.

  • Close shave

Keep in mind

  • The most expensive

What we look for in a razor

Number of blades
More blades spread the pressure and shave closer in a single stroke. At the same time, friction increases – with sensitive skin or ingrown hairs, three blades or a safety razor are often more comfortable.
Pivoting head
A flexible head follows your chin and jawline and reduces nicks.
Lubricating strip
Moisture or gel strips help the blade glide, but they don’t replace a shaving gel.
Blade costs
You pay for the handle once, but for blades over and over. Work out the price per blade – the differences are big.
Trimmer blade
A single blade on the back helps with edges under the nose and around the sideburns.

Frequently asked questions

Which razor gives the closest shave?

Five-blade systems such as the Gillette Fusion5 ProGlide or Wilkinson Hydro 5 give a very close shave in a single stroke. Whether that’s the most comfortable for you depends on how sensitive your skin is.

How often should I change the blade?

After about five to ten shaves, sooner if your beard is thick. A blunt blade pulls and irritates the skin.

Wet shave or electric shaver – which is gentler?

A wet shave is closer; electric shavers irritate some skin less. If you often get spots or ingrown hairs, switching methods often helps.

Can I use a men’s razor on my legs?

Yes. Women’s razors often have wider lubricating strips and a different handle shape, but the blades are similar.
