What we look for in a beard trimmer

Blades
Sharp stainless steel or titanium blades cut cleanly instead of tearing hairs. Self-sharpening blades last longer but don’t replace regular cleaning.
Lengths
For stubble and short beards, fine steps (0.5 to 1 millimetre) count. For full beards, you need a comb up to at least 20 millimetres – or scissors and a comb.
Power
A powerful motor cuts dense beards in one pass. Devices that are too weak pull at the hairs and need several passes.
Battery
An hour’s runtime lasts many weeks. A quick charge for a few minutes of trimming is handy if the battery runs flat.
Washable
A rinsable cutting head is more hygienic and saves time. Fully waterproof devices can also be used in the shower.
Attachments
Detail trimmers for edges and nose hair trimmers are useful. Big sets are only worth it if you really use the parts.

What’s the difference between a beard trimmer and hair clippers?

A beard trimmer has a narrower cutting head and finer length steps for short facial hair. Hair clippers are wider and designed for longer hair on your head. Multigroom sets combine both.

How often should I trim my beard?

A short beard every two to four days; a full beard needs shaping about once a week. Edges get noticed sooner than length – they need attention more often.

Does a beard grow faster if you trim it?

No. Trimming changes neither growth nor density. But a regularly trimmed beard looks more even and therefore fuller.

Can I shave with a beard trimmer?

Without a comb, most devices trim very short, but not perfectly smooth. For a smooth shave or sharp edges, you need a foil head or a razor.

How do I clean my beard trimmer?

After every trim, tap or brush out the hairs, rinse washable heads under water and let them dry well. If the manufacturer recommends it, oil the blades now and then.
