Exfoliation is something of a magic bullet when it comes to healthy, young skin. But did you know that there are also exfoliating products for your scalp? Scalp peeling

Scalp scrub - 6 products in the test

Let's make it short: scalp peeling helps you to free your head from residues and unwanted particles. And this includes both the body's own residues and those of care products. Your top scalp layer renews itself about every four weeks. Old cells are removed as Shed shed. This is normal and good, but if there are problems with the scalp, this can lead to the dandruff becoming too large and visible. Then a Anti Dandruff Shampoo. A scalp scrub removes old dandruff from your scalp and supports cell renewal. On the other hand, the scrub also helps to remove residues of shampoos, Conditioner and other hair products. Washing the hair does not always remove all residues; silicones in particular are often stubborn (more information below). Therefore, it makes sense to use a peeling from time to time as a deep cleansing.

But which products are suitable for scalp peeling? And what alternatives are there to exfoliation? We have compiled the top 6 products in our test.

The Top 6 Scalp Exfoliating Products

1st place: Ikoo Sea Salt Scalp Scrub

Scalp peeling

The test winner! Our absolute recommendation when it comes to scalp peeling with sea salt. Peeling salt crystals are used here. The salt has an antibacterial effect, reliably frees the scalp from skin residues and care residues, and also gives the peeling a unique, natural scent. The peeling is very firm and can therefore be used very effectively for a price of just under 15 euros.

In addition to sea salt, oils and hibiscus extract are included, which additionally Care hair and make the Ikoo a very good addition to your normal shampoo. The anti-dandruff effect is very good, and the sea salt peeling can also help with psoriasis due to its many positive properties. If you would like to try something new, our 2nd place is definitely the best choice.

  • Good scalp exfoliating properties thanks to sea salt
  • Simple, effective application
  • Pleasant smell

2nd place: Urtekram Green Matcha Shampoo

Head-skin peeling

Not only "real" peelings with appropriately granular particles remove residues from the scalp and hair, but also deep-cleansing shampoos enable this effect. One of the best products for this is the Green Matcha Shampoo by Urtekram. The price of just over 13 euros for half a litre is very fair, considering that the shampoo is certified organic, vegan, animal-free and 100 percent free of silicone, paraffin and mineral oil.

The ingredients of this scalp scrub include an antioxidant extract, hyaluronic acid and a microalgae anti-dirt extract. The result? Perfectly clean hair and a cleansed scalp. Ideal for applying a treatment afterwards, for example. Opinions differ on the smell, but the shampoo is very economical. Due to the deliberate absence of silicones, the hair is difficult to comb after using Green Matcha Shampoo. You should therefore see the product for what it is: a cleanser. Like a Face cleansing you should therefore use a care product afterwards - then you will enjoy the Urtekram shampoo for a long time!

  • Organic certified
  • Shampoo with deep cleansing
  • Very productive

3rd place: Goldwell Dualsenses Scalp Deep Cleansing

Scalp peeling

The Scalp Deep Cleansing by Goldwell was specially developed for people with increasingly thin hair or scalp problems. As the name promises, the shampoo reliably removes residues of styling products in the hair and also chlorine. According to the manufacturer, the product is also effective against hair loss. It is best to use the Cleansing Shampoo once a week, in addition to your normal shampoo. It is also important to leave the Cleansing Shampoo on long enough.

  • Suitable for people with thin hair
  • Very good deep cleaning
  • Removes silicones and other styling product residues

4th place: Natura Siberica Sea Buckthorn Scalp Scrub

Natura-Siberica

What we particularly like about the Natura exfoliating shampoo are the natural ingredients. In keeping with the name, Siberian sea buckthorn is used (organic), and the scrub also contains arctic raspberry seeds, organic mint, organicargan oilcalendula and numerous vitamins. Surprisingly, the product foams despite the natural ingredients stScalp scrub.

This means that it can also be used as a normal shampoo, but at the same time the foam makes it difficult for the exfoliating grains to penetrate to the scalp. The sea buckthorn and amaranth oils promote the formation of keratin, which makes the hair particularly shiny and strong, and the other ingredients fight dandruff, invigorate the scalp and supply the hair roots with nutrients. However, two points prevent a better ranking: the exfoliating particles are sometimes difficult to wash out and opinions regarding the fragrance vary widely. Our fourth place.

  • Many natural ingredients
  • Ideal for care and peeling
  • Smell a little special

5th place: Herbal Essences PURE Deep Cleansing

Herbal-Essences

Like Urtekram, Herbal Essences is also taking a sustainable approach - and here, too, it is not a scrub, but a deep-cleansing shampoo. PURE deep cleansing is certified by the KEW Botanical Institute and has been declared "cruelty free" by PETA. Good for the ecological conscience. Above all, the shampoo smells great, thanks to its special blend of strawberry, mint and jasmine. As with the Urtekram shampoo, this is also a deep cleansing shampoo without exfoliating particles.

The shampoo is especially suitable for those with full and bouncy hair, and uses antioxidants from histidine, aloe vera and seaweed to cleanse. If you suffer from greasy hair or often use styling products, the Herbal Essence shampoo will help you to rid your hair completely of residues. What we also like: the price. At only 2.75 euros for 250 ml, this fragrant shampoo is a real bargain!

  • Very good price-performance ratio
  • Great fragrance
  • Good hair cleansing

6.place: Urban Alchemy - Opus Magnum Salt Scrub Cleanse

Scalp peeling

Urban Alchemy is a fairly young company that focuses on professional hair salons and offers correspondingly high-quality products. The brand is obviously not lacking in self-confidence: Opus Magnum (in German: Großes Werk) is a pompous name for a product that is ultimately only meant to exfoliate the scalp. Instead of relying on shampoo+peeling mixed products, the Salt Scrub Cleanse is clearly to be understood as a peeling.

The contained salt crystals make the product more viscous than an ordinary shampoo and help to effectively remove residues and dandruff from your scalp. And thanks to the argan almond and orange peel contained in the product, care is not neglected either: argan oil is rich in valuable antioxidants and omega-6 fatty acids, which promote cell production and serve as a moisturiser. Combine the product with a conditioner for wonderfully smooth hair that is free of all styling residues and feels healthy and fresh.

  • Developed for hairdressing salons
  • Great peeling effect due to contained salt crystals
  • Moisturising

What is a scalp scrub?

Like the classic Face scrub a scalp scrub is also characterised by its strong granulation, which (mechanically) removes residues, deposits and dandruff from the scalp. The granulation is created by the use of salt, but some products also contain microplastics. This is one of the reasons why you can hardly find real scalp scrubs any more; many manufacturers rely on deep-cleansing shampoos instead. These can be used like a normal shampoo (best in combination with a care product or as a supplement to the normal shampoo once a week) and also reliably remove deposits, styling residues and grease from the hair. Especially in the head area, between dense hairs at the roots, residues have optimal opportunities to adhere for a long time. A deep-cleansing shampoo or scrub should therefore be in every bathroom - for healthy, vital and strong hair.

Why is the care after a scalp peeling so important?

Do you use foam to cleanse your face from time to time? Then you will have noticed that the skin is unprotected afterwards and that it tightens quite a bit when you move your face. The reason for this is that cleansing removes all the oils on the skin and makes the skin brittle. The protective skin barrier is also stressed by cleansing, which is why you should apply a rich cream after cleansing your face. It is no different for the scalp. A scalp scrub removes residues such as silicones, chlorine and dandruff, but also grease. There's nothing wrong with that; after all, that's the job of a scrub or even a deep-cleansing shampoo. High-quality and "genuine" cleansers and scalp scrubs are also characterised by the fact that they deliberately do not contain any conditioning or artificial agents - after all, the aim of the products is to cleanse completely.

However, degreasing also reduces the protective effect of the skin barrier on the head, which can lead to the penetration of harmful substances and ultimately to scalp inflammation. The complete removal of silicones and grease also makes your hair brittle, difficult to comb and sensitive. The perfect combination for healthy hair and a healthy scalp is therefore to perform a deep cleansing with a scalp peeling at regular intervals and then treat your hair with a treatment or a care product.

Why are silicones harmful to my hair?

One of the most important features of a scalp scrub (or even a deep cleansing shampoo) is the removal of silicones. Generally you will find silicones in the Hair care You will come across this term again and again, because silicones have very positive, but also very negative properties, which is why manufacturers are increasingly trying to do without silicones in their hair care products. Silicones are synthetic substances that wrap themselves around your hair like a coat. The advantage of this is that the hair is protected from the outside, becomes soft, supple and shiny and is easy to comb. Silicones are also helpful for the formation of frizz. The disadvantage of silicones: They not only protect for external influences, they also keep important nutrients and care substances as well as oils and moisture away from your hair. As a result, your hair dries out from the inside over time. The big problem with silicones is that they are usually not water-soluble (although some manufacturers now use water-soluble silicones), which makes them very difficult to get out of your hair. A scalp scrub does just that. It removes silicones from the hair, especially from the roots, and thus prepares your hair optimally for the absorption of the important nutrients, which you can then treat your hair with a scalp scrub. Hair Treatment can muster.

FAQ: Questions and answers

What is the difference between a scalp scrub and a deep cleansing shampoo?

A scrub contains larger particles that you can use to mechanically remove dandruff residues from the scalp by massaging them in. A shampoo does not have these particles.

Why do I need a scalp scrub?

Over time, more and more residues from hair styling and care products settle in your hair. A scalp scrub removes this residue and makes your hair clean from the ground up.

How often should I use a scalp scrub?

In general, it is not advisable to wash your hair too often, as this upsets the natural oil layer. Exfoliation or deep cleansing is sufficient about once a week.

Does a scalp scrub also remove colour residues from the hair?

No, there are special other products for this, so-called colour removers. Goldwell Elumen Return, for example, is particularly popular.
