Hair cream care that stays in your hair.

Not all hair creams are the same: one nourishes dry lengths, another defines curls, a third gives short hair shape. Which one you need – and the ones we recommend.

Hair creams we recommend

1Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

For curls

Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

A rich curl cream with shea butter and coconut oil. It gives dry curls moisture and definition and tames frizz – for fine waves it’s usually too heavy.

What we like

  • Defines curls and waves
  • Big tub, goes a long way

Keep in mind

  • Can weigh down fine hair
  • Strong scent
2Maria Nila Structure Repair Leave In Cream

For damaged hair

Maria Nila Structure Repair Leave In Cream

A leave-in cream for damaged hair, often coloured or bleached. According to the manufacturer, it contains algae extract, wheat protein and moringa oil, is vegan and has a colour-protection complex. It makes the lengths supple and easier to comb.

What we like

  • Easy to comb after washing
  • Vegan, according to the manufacturer
  • Suitable for coloured hair

Keep in mind

  • Higher price
3Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique

Before blow-drying

Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique

A blow-dry cream for dry hair that goes into towel-dried hair. It makes detangling easier, protects against blow-dryer heat according to the manufacturer, and leaves lengths smooth and glossy.

What we like

  • Care and heat protection in one
  • Makes blow-drying easier

Keep in mind

  • Expensive
  • Too rich for very fine hair
4American Crew Forming Cream

For short hair and men

American Crew Forming Cream

A styling cream with medium hold and medium shine. It shapes short and mid-length cuts naturally without going stiff – in damp or dry hair.

What we like

  • Natural, flexible finish
  • Washes out easily

Keep in mind

  • Not strong enough for very thick hair
5Schwarzkopf got2b Schmusekatze Anti-Frizz Lotion

Affordable anti-frizz

Schwarzkopf got2b Schmusekatze Anti-Frizz Lotion

A light high-street lotion that smooths flyaways and, according to the manufacturer, protects against styling heat. For tighter budgets and normal to slightly frizzy hair.

What we like

  • Very affordable
  • Light, barely weighs hair down

Keep in mind

  • Limited conditioning effect
  • Not stocked everywhere

What we look for as hairdressers

Which hair cream for what
TypeFor whomWhen to use
Leave-in creamDry, coloured, bleached hairOn towel-dried hair, don’t rinse out
Blow-dry creamAnyone who blow-dries regularlyInto the lengths before blow-drying
Curl creamWaves and curlsScrunch into wet hair, then air-dry or diffuse
Styling creamShort and mid-length hairOn dry or damp hair, shape with your fingers
Hair thickness
Fine hair needs light lotions; thick and curly hair can take rich creams with butters and oils.
Amount
Start with a hazelnut-sized amount and work it into the ends first. Too much cream makes hair look lank.
Roots
Nourishing creams belong on the lengths and ends, not at the roots – otherwise your hair falls flat.
Heat
If you blow-dry or straighten, use a cream with heat protection or add a heat protection spray.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between hair cream and hair oil?

Hair cream contains water and adds moisture; oil forms a film around the hair and seals it. For dry hair, the two complement each other: cream first, then a few drops of hair oil on the ends.

Can hair cream replace hairspray?

Only for light hold. Styling creams shape and tame, but for a style that lasts all day you’ll also need hairspray.

Is hair cream suitable for coloured hair?

Yes – coloured and bleached hair in particular benefits from a leave-in, because it loses more moisture. Some products also contain colour protection.

Does hair cream make hair greasy?

Only if you use too much or it ends up at the roots. A small amount on the lengths is enough.
