Combs
There is no universal sizing for combs. (To clear up all the confusion we've seen in online forums: These lengths refer to the amount of hair left behind, not how much is cut off. If you use a No. 1 comb, ⅛ inch of hair will remain on your head). Some brands simply label the combs in fractions of an inch, which is confusing and easy to get confused about at the moment. Annoyingly, each brand of clipper has its own physical shape, sometimes more than one. Therefore, you generally cannot use one brand of clipper combs for another clipper (there are "universal" replacement sets, but these are not available truly universal).
Combs are made of different types of plastic, which turned out to be a major factor in their usefulness. If they are too stiff or sharp, they can chip or break or be uncomfortable to scratch over a scalp. If they are too flexible, they can bend and flex easily when pressed on the head. This results in different hair lengths and furrows, like you would see in a field on a farm. Some comb designs allow too much play, which can cause hair to get caught and pulled, snapped crookedly, or even cause the combs to pop off in the middle of cutting hair. We found that combs made of rigid ABS plastic performed the best.
A taper lever that moves too easily is terrible, and we found that some taper levers could be accidentally bumped too easily when cutting.
Blade material
Among the hair clippers we tested, there was some variety in blade materials, but our experts agreed that for most home users, even a low-end blade will dutifully cut hair for years or even decades without fuss. Hair clippers have a pair of stainless or carbon steel (or ceramic at the top) combs with teeth. The lower blade is fixed, while the upper blade is directly connected to the motor and swings sideways to cut hair. If carbon models are oiled, they sharpen themselves but are prone to rust. Stainless steel is rust resistant and can be self-sharpening. The length of hair a blade leaves depends on the hair clipper, although it is often one-sixteenth of an inch. If it has a taper lever (more on that in a minute), this length is adjustable.
The taper lever is an advanced feature: the little doodad on the side of a hair clipper that increases or decreases hair length finer than you can by changing combs by moving the bottom blade forward or back. Ideally, you can adjust it with one finger when cutting hair, although it shouldn't be loose enough to slip off a bump or vibration, or you have different hair lengths. A taper lever that moves too easily is terrible, and we found that some taper steps were too light to accidentally bump when cutting. But among professionals with technical skills, it is an essential element for blending and fading between different hair lengths, especially on the side of the head. For a home hair clipper, its value is highly subjective.
Pro models have thick, round, shielded mains cables at least two metres long. Non-Pro models often have thin lamp-wire style cables that tend to get tangled.
Housing
The housing of the hair clipper is almost always made of plastic, although high-end models can be made of metal. In addition to the material, the size of the hair clipper plays an important role: a larger model was at the upper limit of an acceptable size in an adult's hand, while smaller palm-sized models are much more comfortable to hold.
As our expert Mo told us, most non-professional hair clippers share many of the same parts as pro models, but have been reduced to lower their price.
Experience
On the advice of our experts and user reviews, we looked for corded models only because they can be reliably powered without recharging. A haircut can take a while, and the risk of being brought to your knees with a flat battery and half a haircut is not worth the added convenience.
As with blades, most home users do not notice much difference between motor types other than their volume. Magnetic motors are the most common and have a characteristic flapping noise when switched on. The other options are swing motors, which run slower and produce a pleasant hum. One of our experts suggested that advances in magnetic motors effectively make pivot motors obsolete.
