Enzyme peels we recommend

1Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

For every day

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

According to the manufacturer, a powder made from rice enzymes, papain and salicylic acid that only turns into a paste when mixed with water. Mild enough to use daily – and easy to dose exactly.

What we like

  • Very mild, easy to dose
  • Suits many skin types

Keep in mind

  • Pricey for an exfoliator
2Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel

Gentle and nourishing

Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel

A creamy peel with papaya and pineapple enzymes, according to the manufacturer. Leave it on, then rinse off with water – skin looks smoother and fresher afterwards.

What we like

  • Pleasant cream texture
  • Suits dry skin too

Keep in mind

  • Contains fragrance
3DAYTOX Enzyme Peeling

Powder, fairly priced

DAYTOX Enzyme Peeling

According to the manufacturer, an enzyme powder with papaya enzymes and rice protein that you whip into a foam with water. Uncomplicated and cheaper than the premium alternatives.

What we like

  • Mild
  • Good value for money

Keep in mind

  • Powder can puff up when dosing
4Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask

More intensive

Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask

Pumpkin enzymes combined with a fruit acid (glycolic acid), according to the manufacturer. Noticeably stronger than pure enzyme peels – ideal for robust, dull skin, less so for sensitive skin.

What we like

  • Clearly smoother skin
  • Smells of pumpkin

Keep in mind

  • Can tingle
  • Not for sensitive skin
5The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

No enzyme, stronger

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

Not an enzyme peel but a highly concentrated acid peel. It works much more strongly – and is only for experienced, robust skin: ten minutes at most, no more than twice a week, followed by diligent sun protection.

What we like

  • Very effective on dull, rough skin
  • Affordable

Keep in mind

  • High potential for irritation
  • Not for sensitive skin, not on the same evening as retinol

What we look for

Enzyme
Papain (papaya) and bromelain (pineapple) are the classics. Pumpkin enzymes work in a similar way.
Added acids
Many “enzyme peels” also contain fruit acids. That makes them more effective, but also more irritating.
Format
Powders are fresh and easy to dose; masks and creams are more convenient.
Frequency
Once or twice a week; very mild powders more often.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you use an enzyme peel?

Once or twice a week. According to their manufacturers, very mild enzyme powders are also intended for daily use.

Is an enzyme peel suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, it’s considered the gentlest form of exfoliation. Make sure no strong acids have been added, and test it on a small area first.

Can I use an enzyme peel if I have rosacea?

Carefully, and only after checking with your dermatologist – with rosacea, skin reacts quickly even to mild exfoliants.

Enzyme peel or AHA – which is better?

For sensitive skin, the enzyme peel; for robust, dull or blemish-prone skin, acids work more strongly.
