Body butter when lotion just isn’t enough.

Body butter is the richest form of body care – ideal for dry skin, elbows, knees and the colder months. Which ones we recommend and how to apply them without feeling sticky.

Body butters we recommend

1The Body Shop Shea Body Butter

Very rich

The Body Shop Shea Body Butter

A dense, melting texture with shea butter and a nutty scent. Ideal for shins, elbows and knees that turn flaky in winter. Use only a little – it goes a very long way.

  • Goes a long way
  • Melting texture

Keep in mind

  • Takes time to sink in
  • Higher price
2Nivea Body Soufflé

  • Pleasant texture
  • Affordable

Keep in mind

  • Too light for very dry skin

  • No greasy film

Keep in mind

  • Less rich than pure shea butter
4Balea Shea Butter & Argan Oil Body Cream

Best value

Balea Shea Butter & Argan Oil Body Cream

Big pot, small price: shea butter and argan oil in a creamy texture. Balea is the own brand of the German drugstore chain dm – usually cheaper in store than online.

What we like

  • Large quantity

Keep in mind

  • Sometimes pricier online than in store
5Kneipp Almond Blossom Soft Skin Body Butter

Keep in mind

  • Smaller pot
6L’Occitane Ultra Light Body Cream

Light summer option

Keep in mind

  • Expensive
  • Not enough for dry skin

Body butter, lotion or oil?

What we look for

Shea and cocoa butter
In a real body butter, they appear near the top of the ingredients list. If water comes first, it’s more of a cream.
Humectants
Glycerin or urea bind moisture in the skin and complement the lipids well.
Fragrance
Body butter stays on the skin for a long time. For sensitive skin and during pregnancy, choose subtly scented or unscented products.
Packaging
Pots are practical but not hygienic: scoop out the product with dry fingers or a spatula.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between body butter and body lotion?

Body butter contains much more fat and less water. It nourishes more intensively but sinks in more slowly. Lotion is lighter and quicker, but cares for dry skin less lastingly.

Can you use body butter on your face?

Better not. For most faces it’s too rich and can clog pores. There are dedicated creams for the face.

How often should you use body butter?

For dry skin, daily after a shower. For normal skin, it’s enough to treat rough patches.

Is body butter suitable for sensitive skin?

Often yes, if it contains little fragrance. If you have atopic eczema or other eczema, it’s best to use pharmacy products and check with your dermatologist.
