Why Avush is our test winner

How Avush became our No. 1

We were sceptical. Age spots are known to be stubborn – and plenty of creams promise more than they deliver.

In the salon, we’re often asked what works on the spots on the backs of the hands and temples – gently, at home, without a laser. So our team used Avush in the salon themselves.

The results convinced us – that’s why Avush is our No. 1. Don’t just take our word for it: look at the unedited original photos above.

Sound familiar?

  • Light brown spots on the backs of your hands that multiply over the years.
  • Spots on your temples, forehead or décolleté.
  • They make your skin look older than you feel.

These are exactly the age spots we compared the products for – dermatologists call them solar lentigines. If a spot grows, changes shape or colour, itches or bleeds, please have it checked by a dermatologist first.

Three things convinced us:

  1. Two steps instead of one pot.First the tonic on a cotton pad, then the serum – for face and body, for women and men. A short routine you can actually stick to, morning and evening.
  2. Several proven brighteners in one formula.Alpha arbutin (1 % according to Avush), liquorice root, sea daffodil, Skin Moon™, niacinamide and a vitamin C derivative. They all target how melanin – the pigment that makes up the spots – is formed or distributed.
  3. No hydroquinone, kojic acid or hormones. In the UK and EU, hydroquinone is only available on prescription, and kojic acid is controversial. Avush uses neither. Dermatest® rates its skin tolerance as “excellent”.Dermatest seal: Original, excellent, 10/2023

Good to know

Can age spots be removed?

They can only be removed completely at a dermatologist’s, for example with laser or freezing. Skincare can visibly lighten age spots and even out your skin tone – gently, at home and with no downtime. Many people combine both, or start with skincare.

Age spot or mole – how can I tell the difference?

Age spots are flat, light to medium brown and appear where skin gets a lot of sun. Moles are often darker, sometimes raised, and not something to treat yourself. If in doubt, and with any change: have it checked by a dermatologist.

Does Avush work on hands too?

Yes – according to the brand, Avush is made for face and body. On the hands in particular, it pays to apply tonic and serum consistently and to put sun protection on the backs of your hands during the day.

What can I realistically expect?

Age spots get lighter – they don’t vanish overnight. Avush says most people see visible improvement after around two to three months of regular use. Older, darker spots often take longer – how much is possible is individual.

Do I need sun protection as well?

Yes – without it, every pigmentation treatment is working against the sun. Avush advises applying the serum in the evening only in summer and wearing at least SPF 50 during the day, reapplied every three hours when you’re out in the sun.

Is Avush gentle on the skin?

Avush contains no hydroquinone, kojic acid or hormones; Dermatest® rates its skin tolerance as “excellent”. The formula does contain fragrance (the ingredient list includes parfum and linalool) – if your skin is very sensitive, patch-test it first. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before use.

“We were sceptical – today we recommend Avush for face and hands. Give it three months, and wear sun protection every day – on the backs of your hands, too.”
