What is GHD Air?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

GHD has been in the hair styling business for almost two decades and its Straightener<\/a> are still considered the best you can buy. In 2012, it made its first foray into the world of professional hair dryers with the introduction of the GHD Air, which is still considered one of the best in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time of its launch, this attractive, stylish dryer was almost revolutionary. At a time when such professional products sold for much more, it offered salon-quality styling and faster drying speeds of many of its competitors. It's a testament to its build quality and design that the Air has barely changed in the last seven years - but can it still hold its own for the myriad of cheaper competitors that have flooded the market since it hit the shelves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GHD Air Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The GHD Air is not a compact hairdryer, nor is it particularly light - but rather than being a negative, these design features have a positive effect on the GHD Air. Its robust, well-built design gives the GHD Air a luxurious feel and the company has successfully balanced the barrel and handle so that the dryer does not feel overly heavy during use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GHD's luxurious aesthetic is enhanced by the dryer's black matte finish, chrome design and chunky red and black buttons, as well as the branded grill at the back of the barrel. Like its straighteners, GHD has managed to pack a decent amount of technology into a straightforward sleek design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside its balanced barrel is a 2100W motor with ionic technology that the company claims reduces frizz and dries hair \"twice as fast\" as its competitors. This motor controls two power settings and two heat settings on the back of the handle, as well as a cold-shot button on the inside of the handle under the barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This positioning of the setting and temperature buttons makes the GHD Air easy to operate regardless of which hand you use, and you are less likely to switch it off in the middle of drying, as is the case with dryers where power switches are located inside the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cold shot has been stowed too close to the bottom of the barrel to prevent it from being accidentally bumped. Conversely, it is more difficult and cumbersome to use in due course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another drawback is that this setting range is lower than almost all competitors, including the Dyson Supersonic, which offers three power and temperature settings and a cold shot. Unlike Dyson, which supplies two nozzles and a diffuser with dryer, the GHD Air only comes with a single nozzle, other accessories are sold separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite GHD's claims about the speed and frizz-reducing properties of the air, the dryer fell short in both categories compared to some of its competitors. It produces a powerful blast of hot air and our hair dried in a respectable time of four minutes and two seconds. However, we used travel dryers that are almost a minute faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When using the GHD for styling, rather than just roughly drying our hair, this time increased to four minutes and 50 seconds - 45 seconds slower than the more expensive Dyson and on average 30 seconds slower than the cheaper BaByliss model we tested. It should be noted that while both of the travel dryers mentioned are fast, they do not have ionic technology, so not as much frizz is removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, the GHD Air removed the frizz adequately and almost lived up to its claims, although we still had to straighten our hair to achieve the desired smooth finish. This added about 30 seconds of styling time. While these time increases don't seem like huge differences, the extra seconds needed to dry and straighten your hair add up, and for the price of the GHD Air as well as its bold performance promises, we expected more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, we have to give the GHD Air credit for how well it protected our hair. After just one week, we have noticed less breakage and the dryer is one of the quietest we have ever used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Ghd Air verdict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For a dryer that has barely changed in almost a decade, the GHD Air is still one of the best hair dryers around. hold its own in an increasingly flooded market. However, it is no longer a market leader. Cheaper competitors have since caught up with and in some cases overtaken the GHD Air in terms of settings, technology and design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the GHD Air were cheaper, our expectations would be lower and many of its relatively minor flaws would feel almost insignificant. Unfortunately, it seems that you pay a premium for the brand name when you buy a GHD Air. We also use this hairdryer ourselves in our salon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
